Egyptian sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) is one of Egypt's most commercially significant herb exports. Egypt ranks first globally in basil exports, with Beni Suef and Minya producing the highest quality grades due to the extended growing season and controlled Nile irrigation that allows three to four harvests per year.
The multiple-harvest cycle is a key commercial advantage. While Mediterranean and European basil origins produce one seasonal harvest, Egyptian farms deliver consistent supply throughout the year — critical for food manufacturers and seasoning blenders who need year-round procurement.
Egyptian basil is valued for its high linalool content, the primary aromatic compound responsible for the sweet, slightly floral scent profile preferred by European food manufacturers. Essential oil content typically runs 0.3 to 0.8% v/w depending on harvest timing and growing conditions.
Primary applications include culinary seasoning products, Italian food manufacturing, herbal extract production, essential oil distillation, and natural cosmetic formulations.
Available grades: whole dried leaves for premium culinary applications, cut and sifted for seasoning blends and extract production, and powder for flavoring and cosmetic applications. Packed in double-layer kraft sacks with polyethylene inner lining, 10kg to 25kg configurations.
