Egyptian hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa), known locally as Karkadeh, is one of Egypt's most internationally traded botanicals. The deep crimson color and high anthocyanin concentration are the primary quality markers that beverage manufacturers, tea blenders, and natural food colorant suppliers test for when sourcing.
Sourced from Beni Suef, where the dry climate and extended sun exposure during the growing season produce calyces with consistently high pigmentation. Harvest runs from August to October, with peak calyx development in September.
Available grades: whole calyces for premium tea and visual-appeal products, cut and sifted for standard tea blending and extract production, and powder for natural colorant and functional beverage applications. Buyers can specify calyx size, foreign matter limits, and color intensity requirements.
COA parameters available on request: moisture content (max 12%), anthocyanin content, total aerobic microbial count, E. coli and Salmonella absence, and multi-residue pesticide panel against EU MRL standards. Packaging in double-layer kraft sacks with polyethylene inner lining, 5kg to 25kg configurations.
Primary export markets: Germany, United States, France, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Mexico. Hibiscus from Egypt exported over 22,000 metric tons in 2024, with demand from the functional beverage sector growing year on year.
