Egyptian cumin seeds (Cuminum cyminum) are harvested annually in Upper Egypt. Egyptian cumin is recognized for its strong, earthy aroma driven by high cuminaldehyde content — the primary volatile compound that determines flavor strength in end-product applications including ready meals, spice blends, curry powders, and food seasoning.
Egypt supplies Saudi Arabia and Morocco as primary markets, with consistent exports to European food manufacturers. Egyptian cumin accounts for roughly 20% of Egypt's total spice exports by value, making it one of the country's most commercially significant seed exports.
Quality is determined by essential oil content — first grade cumin should exceed 2ml/100g volatile oil — alongside purity, moisture, and uniform seed size. Machine cleaning and Sortex optical sorting achieve 99%+ purity, removing foreign matter, broken seeds, and color-defective seeds before packing.
